Meet Christopher Raxworthy (pp. 118–119)

Step 1. Questions

Living things have different life cycles. Some living things grow up quickly, but other living things grow more slowly. A wide variety of animals live on the island of Madagascar. They grow and change in different ways.

Write a compare-and-contrast report about the life cycle of a Mantella poison frog and that of a dwarf dead leaf chameleon. Use the article on pages 118–119 of your textbook. Also, you should research the two animals and their life cycles. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What are the stages in a Mantella poison frog's life cycle? About how long is each stage?
  • What are the stages in a dwarf dead leaf chameleon's life cycle? About how long is each stage?
  • How are the animals' life cycles alike?
  • How do the animals' life cycles differ?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to research other Web sites. You also can research the Mantella poison frog and the dwarf dead leaf chameleon at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers to the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Amphibians: Mantella
The San Diego Zoo provides information about animals on its Animal Bytes pages. Read the article about Mantella poison frogs. The Quick Facts section has information about the animal's life cycle. Age of maturity tells how long it takes the animal to become an adult.
Take Notes:

Mantella Frogs
The Sea World Web site has some facts about Mantella poison frogs. Read the description and learn about the animal's diet. Focus on the Incubation, Sexual Maturity, and Life Span sections when you think about the life cycle of the frog. Check out the Fun Facts, too!
Take Notes:

Reptiles: Chameleon
The San Diego Zoo has information about chameleons, also. Visit this page to learn more about the life cycles of chameleons. This Web page has general information about chameleons, so compare what you learned from your textbook about dwarf dead leaf chameleons with the information on this page.
