Meet Ro Kinzler (pp. 222–223)

Step 1. Questions

Ro Kinzler spends much of her time studying lava from volcanoes. Have you ever seen a volcano or a picture of an erupting volcano? The lava from volcanoes helps Ro and other scientists learn about Earth's magma.

Write a report about the causes and effects of Ro's studies. Use the Internet to learn more about volcanoes. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What does Ro Kinzler do?
  • Why does Ro take lava samples?
  • What is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge?
  • Why did Ro visit the Mid-Atlantic Ridge?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above. Write down what you learn in the note-taking boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to research other Web sites. You also can research volcanoes at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers to the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Volcanoes
The Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, put together this Web site. Read this page to get an introduction to volcanoes. Click VOLCANO WATCH: MAPPING NEW LAVA to read about why scientists map lava flows. Click the picture of the camera to see photographs of erupting volcanoes.
Take Notes:

Plates on the Move
Find the button on the map that explains the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Start by clicking SKIP INTRO. Then click TO MAP. Find the button that describes underwater volcanic eruptions. Look in the Atlantic Ocean! Click the button to learn about the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. You can play the animation. Click STORY to read about this long, underwater volcanic chain. After reading, you can go back to the map to learn about volcanoes on other parts of Earth.

Ro Kinzler
The American Museum of Natural History has a Web page for Dr. Ro Kinzler. Read about how she spends her days studying volcanoes. Click the photographs of Ro to learn more about her journeys.
