Saving the Soil (pp. 302–303)

Step 1. Questions

Have you ever planted crops in a garden? Maybe you have planted tomato seeds or cucumber seeds. Farmers work hard to harvest crops for people to eat. They use different methods to protect the soil where their crops grow.

Write a report about the importance of protecting farm soil. You can research farming online. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • Why is it important for farmers to protect the soil?
  • What is healthy soil?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of using contour plowing?
  • How is no-till planting useful for farmers? What are some problems with till planting?
  • Why do farmers plant cover crops? What are the pros and cons of using this technique?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above. Write down what you learn in the note-taking boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to research other Web sites. You also can research farming and soil at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers to the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Toolbox Tip: Click here to learn how to copy and paste information from a Web page into a new file.

How Much Soil Is There?
This NASA Web site will help you understand why it is important to protect soil. You will learn that there is very little usable soil on Earth. After you have read the text on the first page, click the link just below the text. Continue to do so from page to page.
Take Notes:

What's on, and in, the Horizon?
Soil has different layers, or horizons. Read about each of the four layers on this Web page from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Think about what makes soil healthy.
Take Notes:

Contour Farming
This Web site was made by people at Purdue University. Read all about how and why farmers use contour plowing. How does contour plowing help protect the soil? What problems could farmers encounter with contour plowing?

Feeding a Hungry Planet
Scroll down the page until you get to the part titled "Down with the plow?" Here you can read about no-till planting. Find out why some farmers have been using this method.

Cover Crop
Here is another Web page from Purdue University. This page has information about using cover crops to protect soil. Learn how planting a cover crop works and how it helps. What might be some disadvantages of using cover crops?
