Magnetic Migration (pp. 478–479)

Step 1. Questions

How do birds find their way on long journeys? Scientists believe that a mineral inside a bird's head works like a compass to help the bird know in which direction to go.

Write a story about a trip that you have taken to a new place. You will need to research the different tools that help people find their way. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What tools help people figure out directions?
  • How does a compass work?
  • What is a GPS system, and how does it work?
  • What other methods do people use to help find their way?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the note-taking boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to research other Web sites. You also can research direction tools at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers to the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Without a Compass
When you do not have a compass, what can you use to find your way? Read this Web page from the Queensland government in Australia to find out.

Map Skills
This fun Web site from the BBC has information about how to read a map. Have you read a road map before? Knowing different skills helps people read maps. After reading the text in the white box, click NEXT to learn about four different parts of a map. Read about compass skills, grid references, symbols and keys, and scales.
