Saving Water the Yucca Plant Way (p. 58)

Step 1. Questions

Imagine living in a place that has no rainfall for years! Some deserts are this dry. You certainly would have to learn how to save water if you lived in one of these places.

Write an article that explains the process of CAM photosynthesis in a yucca plant. You will research photosynthesis, CAM photosynthesis, and yucca plants. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What is photosynthesis?
  • What is special about CAM photosynthesis?
  • Why do yucca plants use CAM photosynthesis? Why do only certain plants use it?
  • What are the results of this kind of photosynthesis?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learned in the note-taking boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to research other Web sites. You also can research photosynthesis at the library. When you have finished, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your article.

Step 2. Research

Research answers to the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Introduction to Photosynthesis
This page provides a fun introduction to photosynthesis. You'll learn how plants use sunlight to create food. The diagram on the page may give you ideas for your own diagram. The page is provided by FT Exploring Science and Technology Education.
Take Notes:

Desert Diary, 12 July 2001
Read a paragraph on CAM photosynthesis. You also can click AUDIO and listen to it. Try to picture in your mind the steps in the process. Decide what someone would need to know to understand CAM photosynthesis. This page is sponsored by the University of Texas at El Paso. It is part of a Web site about desert natural history.

The Yucca Page
This great Web page will teach you all about the yucca plant and its many different species. Click on the photographs for a better view.
