How Earthquakes Help Predict Volcanic Eruptions? (p. 280)

Step 1. Questions

Volcanologists dedicate their lives to learning about volcanoes. They want to predict volcanic eruptions. One way that they can do this is by analyzing the earthquakes that occur close to volcanoes. Two types of volcanic earthquakes are short-period and long-period earthquakes.

Write an explanatory essay about the differences between short-period and long-period earthquakes. To write your essay, you will need to research volcanic earthquakes. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • In what way do earthquakes relate to volcanic activity?
  • What are short-period earthquakes? How are they produced?
  • What are long-period earthquakes? How are they produced?
  • Why is it useful for scientists to know about the different types of volcanic earthquakes?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the note-taking boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to research other Web sites. You also can research volcanic earthquakes at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your explanatory essay.

Step 2. Research

Research answers to the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Frequently Asked Volcano Questions
This Web site is a great resource on volcanoes. You must understand what causes a volcanic eruption before you can learn about short-period and long-period earthquakes. Click HOW DO VOLCANOES ERUPT? and WHEN WILL A VOLCANO ERUPT? to review this information. When you have finished, you can explore some of the other interesting questions listed, such as HOW HOT IS A VOLCANO? This Web site comes from the United States Geological Survey.
Take Notes:

Volcanic Earthquakes
At this site, you can learn about volcanic earthquakes. First, read about short-period, or volcano-tectonic, earthquakes. Then read about long-period earthquakes. Remember to note the differences between the two types. This Web site explains which earthquake indicates that a volcano is ready to erupt. Michigan Technological University hosts this Web page.
