What Would Happen If Gravity Went Away? (p. 438)

Step 1. Questions

In real life, gravity never actually disappears. However, in some places in the universe, it can become so weak that people and objects become almost weightless.

Write an explanatory essay about what would happen if gravity disappeared. Describe how things in the picture on page 438 would be different. You will research gravity and try some online experiments. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What is gravity? What does gravity do?
  • How does gravity affect objects of different weights?
  • How does gravity affect you and the things around you?
  • What would happen if gravity changed or disappeared?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learned in the note-taking boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to research other Web sites. You also can research gravity at the library. When you have finished, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your essay.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Roller Coaster
On this Web site from Funderstanding, you can see what happens when gravity changes. Click and drag the sliders to change the shapes of the hills and the loop. Change the speed, gravity, mass, or friction. Then click the arrow to start the coaster. Watch the little red car as you change different settings.
