The Great Jump in China (p. 567)

Step 1. Questions

You have read about Danny Way, a professional skateboarder who jumped across the Great Wall of China on his skateboard. Way used a tall ramp to gain the speed and the height that he needed.

What other kinds of devices do professional athletes use? Write a fictional narrative about what it might be like to be a professional athlete. Include information about a device the athlete uses and why that device is important. Start by researching sports and the devices used to play those sports. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What are some professional sports?
  • What kinds of devices do professional athletes use to play sports?
  • How do the devices work?
  • What problems might professional athletes face if they did not have the devices?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the note-taking boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to research other Web sites. You also can research professional sports at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your fictional narrative.
