A Humane Mousetrap (p. 618)

Step 1. Questions

At times, mice can become a problem in homes. People have created mousetraps to solve the problem. The mousetraps are made through the use of simple machines. Sometimes, squirrels can become a problem at bird feeders, eating all of the birdseed. Like mousetraps, some bird feeders are made with simple machines to keep squirrels away.

Write an explanatory essay that describes a squirrel-resistant bird feeder. To write your essay, you will need to research different kinds of bird feeders. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What are some basic types of bird feeders?
  • What simple machines help keep squirrels away from bird feeders?
  • How does placing a bird feeder on a pole help keep squirrels away?
  • What is a baffle, and how does it work?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the note-taking boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to research other Web sites You also can research squirrel-resistant bird feeders at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your explanatory essay.
