Frozen Frogs (pp. 16–17)

Step 1. Questions

All animals have certain adaptations that allow them to survive in some climates but not in others. As you learned in your textbook, wood frogs survive the cold winters of the Arctic Circle by freezing! Many animals have developed different adaptations that allow them to stay alive during cold winters or hot summers.

Write a descriptive essay about an animal that can survive severe weather conditions. To write your essay, you will need to research different habitats and animal adaptations. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What makes it difficult for animals to survive in very cold regions?
  • How have animals adapted to live in the frozen Arctic and Antarctic?
  • Why is it hard to survive in hot, dry regions?
  • What special adaptations must animals have to live in hot, dry regions?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the note-taking boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to research other Web sites. You also can research animal adaptations at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your descriptive essay.

Step 2. Research

Research answers to the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Wildlife in Winter
This is a great Web site to read all about how different animals are adapted to survive in very cold regions. Scroll down to read about how animals can keep warm under a blanket of snow. This site also gives some general information about adaptations.

Desert
Read this Web site to learn about deserts. Click on ANIMALS to learn about the different animals that are adapted to live here. Click on CLIMATE to learn more about desert climates. This Web site was created by teachers and students at West Tisbury School in Massachusetts.

Animal Fact Sheets
After you have selected an animal to write about, visit this Lincoln Park Zoo Web site. It contains information about specific animals and their adaptations. Under "Animal Fact Sheets," click on REPTILES & AMPHIBIANS, BIRDS, and MAMMALS. Then click on the underlined animal name to read about the animal's special adaptations.
