A Trip to a "New" Rain Forest (p. 218)

Step 1. Questions

You have read about a trip a group of scientists took to a rain forest in the Foja Mountains of New Guinea. They discovered many new species and saw some rare animals that were thought to be extinct. What made this trip unique?

Research different ecosystems and learn what each one is like. Then write a personal narrative about visiting the ecosystem of your choice. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What are the nonliving parts of this ecosystem?
  • How do plants and animals interact in the ecosystem?
  • What factors affect life in this ecosystem?
  • Why is this ecosystem important?
  • What treasure might you bring home from a trip to this ecosystem?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the note-taking boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to research other Web sites. You also can research ecosystems at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your personal narrative.

Step 2. Research

Research answers to the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Toolbox Tip: Click here to learn how to print a Web page.

What's It Like Where You Live?
Here you can learn about the different ecosystems on Earth. Click the region of your choice to learn more about it. There are links to the plants and animals that live in each ecosystem as well as links to even more sites. This is a great place to pick the ecosystem you would like to write about. This Web site comes from the Missouri Botanical Gardens.
Take Notes:

Ecosystems
This Web site from Windows to the Universe is all about ecosystems. Read about ecosystems. Then read about each ecosystem by clicking each underlined blue name at the bottom of the page. Click the map to make it larger. Then you can see where each ecosystem is on the map.
Take Notes:

Welcome to a World of Exploration with Brookfield Zoo!
The Adventure Trail at Chicago's Brookfield Zoo has an awesome interactive journey that can help you plan your narrative. Scroll down and click WAYS OF KNOWING TRAIL to visit a rain forest and see the people and animals that live there. Then you can help solve a mystery. Perhaps you want to include a mystery in your narrative. When you have finished this activity, go back to the main page and click INTO THE WILD to read the travel diaries of real scientists.
