A Call for Help (p. 60)

Step 1. Questions

There are more than 300 threatened or endangered species in California. Most of these species are in danger because their habitats are in danger.

Write a persuasive letter about protecting environments in your area. Begin by researching endangered species, why they are endangered, and what you can do to help. Here are some questions to guide you:
  • What is an endangered species?
  • What is a habitat?
  • What are some ways people threaten species?
  • Why do you think it's important to protect species?
  • How can you help protect endangered species?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learned in the note-taking boxes.

You may use search engines to research other Web sites. You can also research endangered species and preservation efforts at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your letter.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!
