Clean Steam (pp. 348–349)

Step 1. Questions

Geothermal energy is a clean, inexpensive source of power. Unfortunately, there are only a few places around the world where it can be used.

Write a report about geothermal energy and its advantages or disadvantages over energy from fossil fuels. To do so, you will research both types of energy and their effects on the environment. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What are the advantages of using fossil fuels for energy?
  • How does the use of fossil fuels affect the environment?
  • What is geothermal energy and how is it used to generate electricity?
  • What are some disadvantages of geothermal energy?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above. Write down what you learn in the note-taking boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to find other Web sites. You also can research fossil fuels and geothermal energy at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Toolbox Tip: Click here to learn how to cite Web sources.

Fossil Fuels
This Web page from Iowa Public Television explains what fossil fuels are and their uses, benefits, and disadvantages. Click the links on the left to compare fossil fuels to other energy sources, including geothermal energy. Or explore the links on the right for information about current energy news and statistics.
Take Notes:

Geothermal Energy
Read all about geothermal energy from the scientists at the California Energy Commission. Study the diagrams and look for details about how geothermal energy is used to make electricity. As you read, try to draw your own conclusions about the advantages and disadvantages of geothermal energy.
Take Notes:

Energy From the Earth's Core
Visit this Web page to learn where to find geothermal energy and why it is more environmentally-friendly than energy from fossil fuels. Click ENERGY FACTS at the top of the page to return to a main menu of energy-related topics, including facts about non-renewable resources. This page comes from the Energy Information Administration of the United States Department of Energy.
