Monarch Butterflies at Risk (pp. 364–365)

Step 1. Questions

Severe weather conditions, such as unusually cold temperatures and rainfall amounts, have created problems for monarch butterflies. We too are affected by severe weather, from temperature extremes to strong winds to blizzards.

What types of weather conditions have you experienced? Have any of the experiences been severe? Write a personal narrative about a severe weather experience you have had. Research various weather conditions that occur in the United States to gather details for your story. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What types of severe weather occur in the United States?
  • How does severe weather affect the land?
  • What effects does severe weather have on the people in a community?
  • What actions should be taken after a severe weather event?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above. Write down what you learn in the note-taking boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to find other Web sites. You also can research severe weather at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your personal narrative.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!
