Perfectly Preserved (pp. 482–483)

Step 1. Questions

You have read about a team of archaeologists who explored tombs near the Saqqara pyramids in Egypt. During their exploration, they discovered three wooden coffins from about 2,500 years ago. This amazing discovery could help scientists learn about the Twenty-Sixth Dynasty.

Write a fictional story based on the actual events that these archaeologists experienced. Describe the archaeologists' discovery of the coffins and the mummies inside them. Start by researching this major discovery in Egypt. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • Where were the mummies of the Twenty-Sixth Dynasty found?
  • How were the mummies preserved?
  • What is an archeological dig in Egypt like?
  • How might the archaeologists have felt when they found the mummies?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the note-taking boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to research other Web sites. You also can research the discovery near the Saqqara pyramids at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your fictional story.

Step 2. Research

Research answers to the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!
