Biofuels (pp. 568–569)

Step 1. Questions

Scientists are looking for alternatives to fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are nonrenewable, and they pollute the environment. Biofuel is an alternative type of fuel. Biofuels are made from recently living organisms, so they are a renewable energy source.

Write a report about the use of biofuels as an alternative energy source. Before you begin, you will need to research biofuels and fossil fuels. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What problems arise from using fossil fuels?
  • What are biofuels, and how are they made?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of using biofuels?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learn in the note-taking boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to research other Web sites. You also can research biofuels and fossil fuels at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers to the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!

Toolbox Tip: Click here to learn how to move from one Web page to another.

Energy Profiles
This Web site from Iowa Public Television is all about energy. Click FOSSIL FUELS to read about the uses, benefits, and limitations of fossil fuels. Then click BIOMASS to read about biofuels.
Take Notes:

Nonrenewable Energy
Visit this Web page to learn about nonrenewable energy sources. As you read, note some of the problems that arise from using fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas. Click ENERGY FACTS at the top of the page to return to a main menu of energy-related topics, including information about biomass. This site is from the Energy Administration of the U.S. Department of Energy.
Take Notes:

Biomass Energy
Read all about biomass energy from scientists at the California Energy Commission. Study the pictures and diagrams about how biofuels are formed. This page explains how using biofuels can help solve some of the problems caused by fossil fuels.
