Step 1. Questions

Have you ever described an object to someone who has never seen that object? How might you describe yourself to someone who has never met you? You can describe an object by explaining that object's properties.

Write a description of an object that you use every day. Before you begin writing, research matter and its properties on the Internet. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What are some properties of matter?
  • What words can I use to describe properties of matter?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above. Write down what you learn in the boxes.

With teacher supervision, you may use search engines to research other Web sites. You also can research properties of matter at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your description.

Studying Matter
Scroll down to the heading "What is Matter?" Read the definition of matter. Then learn about volume, mass, and properties of matter under each of the headings. Look at the properties of the ball. Many words can be used to describe the ball. Which properties will you use to describe the object that you selected?
