Kid Power for California (p. 196)

Step 1. Questions

There are lots of ways to help your family save energy. Using less water and remembering to turn out the lights are just a few ideas. You can also try to make a difference in your community by influencing your state representative to consider energy-saving ideas.

Write a persuasive letter to your local representative about an energy-related environmental problem in your area. To begin, you will research energy conservation. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • Which energy-related problem do you think is most in need of a solution?
  • Why is energy conservation important for us and for our planet?
  • What are some ways to conserve energy?
  • How can you tell when energy is being wasted?
  • How can you convince others to conserve energy?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learned in the note-taking boxes.

You may use search engines to research other Web sites. Or research energy conservation at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your persuasive letter.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!
