Lasers (p. 215)

Step 1. Questions

Have you ever used a laser? You might not think you have, but every time you play a CD, you are using a laser. Lasers are a form of light-- but they're not your average light!

Write an essay comparing and contrasting lasers to other forms of light. To do this, you will research what lasers are and how they are used. Here are some questions to guide your research:
  • What is a laser?
  • How does a laser work?
  • What are some ways lasers are used?
  • What impact have lasers had on science?
  • How is laser light similar to other forms of light? How is it different?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above, and write down what you learned in the note-taking boxes.

You may use search engines to research other Web sites. Or research lasers at the library. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!
