A layer of dust covers much of the Moon’s surface. During a full Moon, you might see pits called craters. Some of the Moon’s craters were formed by ancient volcanoes. Most of them were caused by chunks of metal or rock that crashed into the Moon. The Moon seems to shine because of the light it reflects. Where the Moon faces the Sun, it is hotter than any spot on Earth.
