The Sun is bright and hot because its gases give off energy. It is millions of times hotter on the Sun than any place on Earth. It is hotter in the Sun’s center than at the surface. Some cooler parts appear as sunspots, or dark areas on the Sun’s surface. The outermost layer of thin gases around the Sun is the corona.
