The Moon changes appearance in monthly cycles. The shape of the lighted part is known as the phase of the Moon. During a(n) New Moon, you can’t see any of the Moon’s sunlit half. More of the Moon becomes visible as the Moon orbits Earth. During a First Quarter Moon, the right half of the Moon is visible. The Second Quarter is called the Full Moon. During this phase, all of the Moon’s sunlit half is visible. In the Waxing Crescent, the phase that is visible is more than New Moon but less than First Quarter. To wax means to grow larger. In the Waxing Gibbous Moon, the phase that is visible is more than First Quarter but less than Second Quarter.
