Plant Life Cycles

Step 1. Questions

Like all living things, plants reproduce. This means they make more of their own kind. Most plants use seeds to reproduce. Others, such as mosses and ferns, use structures called spores.

If you want to grow your own plants, you should know how a typical plant grows from a seed. This is the first stage of a plant’s life cycle—its journey from seed to seedling to young plant to adult plant.

For this e-Journal project, you will research and report on the life cycle of a plant. You also will make a plan to raise plants in your own virtual garden!

Here are some questions to guide your research.
  • How does a plant make seeds?
  • How does a seed germinate, or sprout? What does it need to do this?
  • What should you do to care for plants as they grow?
  • What kind of plants would you grow in a garden? What kind of care would the garden need?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Look for the answers to the questions listed above, and write down what you learn in the note-taking boxes. If you download a picture from a Web site, be sure to note the source.

You may choose to use search engines to research other Web sites. Or visit the library and look in books, journals, or encyclopedias. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.
