Mixtures and Solutions

Step 1. Questions

Most objects around you are not pure substances. Instead, they are mixtures or solutions. Mixtures are made from two or more substances that are physically mixed, but not chemically combined. In a solution, the substances are very thoroughly and evenly mixed.

For this e-Journal project, you will research and report on three common mixtures or solutions. Choose from those you find at the linked Web sites listed in Step 2. Or use search engines to find other mixtures or solutions of interest.

Here are questions to guide your research:
  • What are the ingredients of the mixture or solution? What are the states of matter (solid, liquid, or gas) of some of these ingredients?
  • If the mixture or solution is found in nature, why is it significant or important?
  • If people make the mixture or solution, why do they choose these specific ingredients?
  • What benefits or uses do the mixture or solution provide?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web sites listed in Step 2. Write down what you learn in the note-taking boxes. When you are ready, follow Steps 3 and 4 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!
