Online Activity: From Pond to Plate
The sentences below describe the steps of the process you have just read about. Put 1 in front of the step that comes first. Then put 2, 3, 4, and 5 in front of the steps that follow.

The newly hatched fish, called sac fry, swim in special areas until they are 4 to 6 inches long. Then they are moved to large catfish ponds.

Eggs are collected and taken to special hatcheries. The eggs hatch after seven days.

Before the fish are shipped to stores and restaurants, they are checked by U.S. Government inspectors.

The catfish are cleaned and frozen. They are sold in many different ways—whole fish, steaks, and in pre-cooked dishes.

After 18 months, when the fish weigh about 1.5 pounds, they are harvested from the ponds in large nets. The fish are taken alive in special tank trucks to a processing plant.
