1. Watch the population of the United States grow. Go to U.S. Census Bureau POPClocks. http://www.census.gov/main/www/popclock.html
- Look at the U.S. Population Estimate.
- Note the date, time, and population estimate.
- Click the U.S. Population Estimate clock.
- Note the date, time, population projection, and component settings.
Online Activity: Growing All the Time
Find the number that tells how many seconds it takes for a net gain of one person. Use that number to fill in the first blank below. Then fill in the rest of the blanks to estimate the United States projected population growth for one minute, one hour, and one day.
2. Now move to a new Web site that will allow you see where people born in foreign countries have settled. To find out which eight states have the highest percentages of the U. S. foreign-born population go to Foreign Born Population. http://www.ameristat.org/foreign_born_population/Foreign-Born_Drawn_Eight_States.html
- Read the three paragraphs. How has the distribution of the foreign-born population changed in the last 100 years?
- Enlarge the pie charts by clicking any one of them.
- Examine the percentages of foreign-born population by state residence on all three pie charts: 1890, 1960, and 1999.
- Compare the percentages for the three years shown.
Offline Activity: The Changing Residences of Foreign-Born Population.
Using the three pie charts and the information at the Web site, write a few paragraphs to describe the differences among the three charts. Be sure to include the reasons that you think the percentages have increased or decreased in New York, California, and Florida.
