Online Activity: What’s Happening in Virginia City?
Take a trip back in time to 1865. Pretend you are living in Virginia City. Right now, you are sitting inside one of the city’s many buildings. A reporter from the East Coast is asking you questions about daily life in Virginia City. Choose and explore one building. Use the facts and pictures at the Web site to answer the reporter’s questions.
2. In 1862, gold was discovered in the Idaho territory. The Idaho territory gold rush began. Towns such as Idaho City grew quickly during this period of “gold fever.” To see some Idaho City buildings built during the Idaho territory gold rush go to Ghost Town Gallery. http://www.ghosttowngallery.com/
- In the left column, find and click Gold Rush History. Read about the California Gold Rush.
- Click Ghost Town Index. Scroll down to Idaho and click Idaho City.
- Examine all of the pictures. Look for clues to each building's purpose.
- Click Map to see where Idaho City is within Idaho. Idaho City is in the Boise area.
- Click Map on this page to see Idaho and other Western states.
Offline Activity: Mining Town Guide
Many buildings that were built in Idaho City during Idaho’s gold rush still stand today. Be a mining town guide. Look at the photographs on the Web site of Idaho City buildings and places. Write a sentence or two about each of the photographs. Tell what you think happened in each of the buildings and places. How were the buildings used? Who worked in them? What did they do there? Who is buried in the graveyard?
