1. Explore the environment of your state. Go to Major Land Resource Areas.

  • Click the area where you live to see an enlargement of your region.
  • Then, click the color that includes the place where you live. A new window will open.
  • Click More information about this MRLA.
  • Read about the land use for your resource area.
  • Explore some other topics about your environment. Click and read Elevation and Topography, Climate, and Water.

Online Activity: No Place Like Home
Write about the environment of your state. Type the name of your state and the Major Land Resource Area (MLRA) name in the spaces provided. Then complete the chart by typing summaries of each topic you explored on the Web site. Which facts would you illustrate with pictures to make an Infographic for your state?

2. You can learn a lot about a state from its quarter. Go to Netstate.com.

  • Click Yes for one of the states that has a quarter that has been released.
  • Read about that state’s quarter and examine its design. Then click the Back arrow.
  • Click and see coins and background for at least three states.
  • Then go back and click the name of a state that has not yet had its quarter released.
  • Read the information about that state.

Offline Activity: A Quarter for Your Thoughts
Be a coin designer! Think about the coins you saw on the Web site. Then design a quarter to honor the state you read about that has not yet had its quarter released. Draw your design. Be sure to include the four things that must appear on each state coin: the state’s name, the year it joined the union, the year the coin is minted, and E Pluribus Unum, a Latin phrase meaning "From many, one."
