1. To see the land and water features that helped or hindered Native American trade look at this historical map of the Mississippi Territory. http://www.libs.uga.edu/darchive/hargrett/maps/1814m5.jpg
- Examine each part of the map. Use the scroll bars to move around.
- As you scroll, look for the thick lines showing the rivers. Find the names of those rivers.
- Look for these names:
Choctaws Chickasaws Muscogans Lower Creeks Middle Creeks Upper Creeks
- Find the Dividing Ridge.
Online Activity: Rolling on the River
Use the map on the Web site and a present-day map of the United States to answer the following questions. Type your answers into the spaces provided.
2. The Natchez Trace was used for centuries before Europeans came to the Mississippi area. Then, settlers and boatman traveling north from New Orleans walked along the Trace from Natchez to Nashville, Tennessee. Today, the Trace Parkway is a national park traveled by millions of cars a year. At this site you’ll learn about the past and present Natchez Trace. - Read the first page and study the route of the trace on the map.
- Click and read Old Natchez Road. Take notes on some of the facts you read. Then click the Back arrow.
- Click and read the next two sections: Great Age Era and Modern Trace. Take notes on the facts you read.
- Study the map of the Modern Trace.
Offline Activity: Trace Flash Cards
Create flash cards to challenge your classmates. Divide the cards into three equal piles of five. Label the first set Old, the second set Great Age, and the third set Modern. Use art supplies to draw a picture that represents the trace in each time period, perhaps a Native American for Old, a settler for Great Age, and a car for Modern. On the opposite side write a one-sentence fact that is taken from one of the three different sections. Try the flashcards out on a partner. Vote on the best individual flashcards to make a class set.
