1. New Jersey has a rich cultural and ethnic heritage. Read about the differences between early and present-day New Jersey at Camden's History.
http://www.ci.camden.nj.us/history.html

  • Read about Camden's early settlement.
  • What people lived or came to live in New Jersey in the 1600s?
  • At the bottom of the page, click 10.
  • Now read about the groups of people who came to live in Camden between 1870 and 1920.
  • How do you think the different populations changed the community?

Online Activity: New Jersey's Population
Use the information in your Infographic and from the Web site to write a paragraph about New Jersey's diversity. Describe the differences between the people of early, colonial, and modern New Jersey. Tell how you think different populations and their cultures enriched the community.

2. Dutch and Swedish settlers populated regions of New Jersey, vying for control of the local fur trade. To learn about log cabin life in New Jersey go to Found at the Cabin.
http://www.biderman.net/found_at_the_cabin.htm

  • Take an interactive quiz to learn about everyday objects found at a Swedish colonial log cabin.
  • Click Containers and study the picture.
  • Read the quiz and guess how the object was used in colonial life.
  • Click the button for your answer. A new browser window will open and tell you if your answer is right. You'll see a graph of student responses, too.
  • If your answer is wrong, close the window and try again.
  • If your answer is correct, close the window. Then click Next to see another object.
  • Continue until you learn about all seven items. (Note: the last item should say "Mangel.")

Offline Activity: What's the Object?
With a partner, make a list of the activities that the objects at the Web site were used for. Then think of how each activity is done today. Which activity is done the same way today? Think how your life today compares with that of colonial children. Make a comparison chart to give to your teacher.
