1. The Second Battle of Saratoga was perhaps the decisive victory of the American Revolution. Read the story and then go on to play a game to follow the history of the Revolution by visiting Chronicle of the Revolution.

  • Read about the Battle of Saratoga. Click Benedict Arnold and Benjamin Franklin for more information. Then click the Back arrow.
  • Then, play The Road to Revolution: A Revolutionary Game. Click The Game at the bottom of the page. Click turn the page to start.
  • You will start at the Boston Tea Party and each correct answer will move you one step closer to Washington, D.C.
  • If you miss a question, click the Back arrow to try again.
  • Click Continue for each new question. If prompted to visit another American landmark, click the link that asks you to keep traveling or to continue.

Online Activity: Revolutionary Characters
Use the information at the Web site to write three or more sentences describing the role in the American Revolution of each person below.

2. The Saratoga National Historical Park in New York holds re-enactments of the Battles of Saratoga each year. "Listen" to American and British soldiers to find out what their lives were like. Go to The Battle of Saratoga.

  • At the site, lower the volume of the sound after you hear the song once.
  • Click History for a review of the battle.
  • Click either American or British as assigned by your teacher. Explore to learn how your character lived in 1777.
  • Take detailed notes about your character's living conditions, attitudes, and reasons for fighting at Saratoga.

Offline Activity: Revolutionary Role-Play
Imagine that you are one of the characters at the Saratoga re-enactment. Prepare to tell your class—in the role of your character—details of your life and experiences in this battle. Describe the hardships you have endured and the reasons you fought at this battlefield.
