    Web Link Description
An online museum rich in visual displays and descriptions of Egyptian artifacts is available at the University of Memphis Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology Web site. The site also offers a color tour of Egypt and a list of other Egyptian sites.

    Student Objectives
  •
  • to create an exhibit of replicas of ancient Egyptian artifacts
  •
  • to examine and read about artifacts from ancient Egypt

    Before Online Activity
Have students share experiences they have had visiting museum exhibits of artifacts or art from ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, Rome, or India. Then invite students to predict what they might see in an online exhibit of ancient Egyptian artifacts. If you are using Adventures in Time and Place, ask students to remember what they read in Chapter 4, Lesson 4 as they explore this online exhibit.

Have students work individually to construct replicas of Egyptian artifacts, and then have them work as a class to create an exhibit.

Distribute student project sheets. Students will make replicas of Egyptian artifacts that they view online. Instruct them to explore Exhibit of Artifacts. Encourage students to read the information under each artifact to find the answers to the questions on their project sheets. To make replicas of artifacts, students will need the following materials: clay, heavy paper, cardboard, and possibly wood and paint.

If time permits, students may explore About the Institute and Color Tour of Egypt.

    Student Project Sheet
Print the online student project sheet to create a blackline master. For best results, be sure that your browser's font size has been set to "12" and that your browser has been set to print in "portrait mode."

    Sharing the Project
After students have completed their replicas, have them work as a group to arrange the replicas in an exhibit. Some students may create labels with names and descriptions of the replicas; others may draw scenes from ancient Egypt to enhance the exhibit. Invite other classes to view the completed exhibit.

    Assessment Idea
Ask students to choose the item in the exhibit that made the biggest contribution to Egyptian society and to explain their choices.

    Home Connection
Suggest that students and their families look for community resources on ancient Egypt. Is there a museum nearby where artifacts may be seen?
