  • to learn about Henry Hudson's 1609 voyage

    Before Online Activity
Discuss what it would be like to travel to uncharted or unmapped places. How do students feel about such journeys? If you are using Adventures in Time and Place, have students recall from page 175 that Henry Hudson was searching for a Northwest Passage through North America to Asia.

    Have students make individual maps.

    Online Activity

    URL: http://www.georgian.net/rally/hudson/

Distribute student project sheets and basic maps showing an outline of the eastern part of North America. If you are using Adventures in Time and Place, see page 18 of the Grade 5 Outline Map component that accompanies the textbook. Help students navigate through the Web site to find the section about Henry Hudson's third voyage. For each date on their project sheets, encourage students to write the names of the places where Hudson's ship traveled or stopped. Then have them draw the route of Henry Hudson's ship, Half Moon, on the map.

    Student Project Sheet
Print the online student project sheet to create a blackline master. For best results, be sure that your browser's font size has been set to "12" and that your browser has been set to print in "portrait mode."

    Sharing the Project
Display students' maps in the classroom.

    Assessment Idea
Ask students whether they would have liked to have gone on a voyage of exploration in the 1600s. Ask them to explain why or why not.

    Home Connection
Have students ask family members if they are familiar with New York's Hudson River and stories associated with it. Suggest that students and their parents read together Washington Irving's stories The Legend of Sleepy Hollow or Rip Van Winkle.
