    Web Link Description
To find out firsthand what products and services are available from Venezuela, visit Trade Venezuela, an online guide to business and investment opportunities in the country. Index of Products and Services offers an alphabetized list of Venezuelan manufacturers of products and services for export. You can click the manufacturers' names to find contact information about the businesses and technical information about the products.

    Student Objectives
  •
  • to make a graph to summarize Venezuelan trade opportunities
  •
  • to organize products and services into categories
  •
  • to survey Venezuelan products and services

    Before Online Activity
Ask students to think about the manufacturers and other businesses in your community. What is the community known for? Then talk about the products and services offered in your state. What are its primary exports? Finally, ask students to consider the countries of the northern coast of South America and what products they are known for. Students are likely to mention coffee from Columbia and oil from Venezuela. If you are using Latin America and Canada, have students read pages 478-489 about the economy of the North Coast countries, particularly Venezuela. Ask what products, other than oil, they think come from Venezuela. Tell students that they may be surprised at the range of products and services available for export from Venezuela and that at this Web site they will find facts about trade in that country.

Arrange students into pairs. Provide art materials and graph paper for students to use in completing their projects.

Distribute student project sheets, graph paper, and art materials. At the Index of Products and Services page, have students look over the entire list before trying to create or add categories of products. When students are ready to count, point out that although they are made by the same company, several different products may be listed separately. For the purpose of this graph, have students count companies, not individual products. Have students print the product page for reference if possible.

    Student Project Sheet
Print the online student project sheet to create a blackline master. For best results, be sure that your browser's font size has been set to "12" and that your browser has been set to print in "portrait mode."

    Sharing the Project
Invite pairs of students to present their graphs and their conclusions about the Venezuelan economy to the class. Display the completed graphs on a bulletin board.

    Assessment Idea
Ask students to select one company they would invest in if they were an importer and to explain why they made that choice.

    Home Connection
Suggest that students tell their families about the products that Venezuela exports. Have them look for food products, clothing, and other household items to see if any of them came from Venezuela or another South American country.
