Lesson 5: Our Symbols and Pledge

Many different people live in the United States.

Together we make one country.

We are proud of our flag.

We have a song for it called The Star-Spangled Banner.

We also say our Pledge of Allegiance. It is a promise to be a good citizen.

Our flag is a symbol for our country.

A symbol stands for something else.

Our flag is red, white, and blue and has fifty stars.

Each star stands for one of the 50 states.

The bald eagle is a symbol that stands for our country.

The liberty bell is another symbol. It rang long ago when the United States became a country. The Liberty Bell is in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Statue of Liberty has welcomed new people to our country for a long time. The statue is in New York harbor.

Uncle Sam is another symbol for our country. He wears red, white, and blue.
