The Land of Nubia

was located on the Nile River. The Nile is formed by two rivers, the Blue Nile and the White Nile. Like ancient Egypt, Nubia had two . Lower Nubia was in the north and upper Nubia was in the south. Lower Nubia had fertile farmlands while Upper Nubia had a rugged but was rich in minerals.

Nubia and Kush Grow Wealthy

Kush developed cities, trade, a government run by , and complicated religious beliefs. Nubia grew wealthy from its gold, iron, and copper mines. Kush was conquered and ruled by Egypt for over 500 years. Kushites used Egyptian , and pharaohs constructed temples for Egyptian gods. A king of Kush named conquered and ruled all of Egypt for about 50 years. The Assyrians invaded Egypt and drove out the Kushite rulers.

Life in Kush

As capital of Kush, was the center of a powerful kingdom for 600 years. At the top of Kush's was the king or queen. A social pyramid is a triangle-shaped chart that shows the rank of people in a society. After rulers, priests and members of the army were next in order of importance. Below them were and farmers. were at the bottom of the social pyramid. For centuries the throne of Kush was passed to the daughter or son of the king's sister. Kush had a number of queens and priestesses.
