Chapter 2: New York State’s Early People
Step 1. Questions
Students understand how New York’s early people lived. Discuss the major nations of New York Native Americans, including their geographic distribution, economic activities, legends, and religious beliefs; and describe how they depended on, adapted to, and modified the physical environment by cultivation of land and use of sea resources.
Research the major nations of New York Native Americans, and how they adapted to their environment. Here are some questions to guide your research.- What are some of the major nations of New York Native Americans? Find at least three groups.
- Where did each group live?
- How did each group support itself?
- What were the legends and religious beliefs of each group?
- How did they make use of their physical environment for shelter and food?
- How did they adapt to their environment?
To begin, visit the Internet sites listed in Step 2. You may also choose to visit a library, read an article on Native Americans from New York in an encyclopedia, or interview an adult who knows a lot about this subject. Then follow Step 3 to write your report.
