Chapter 3: Europeans Explore New York

Step 1. Questions

Students trace the routes of early explorers and describe the early explorations of the Americas.

Describe the characteristics of early explorers (e.g., Giovanni da Verrazano, Henry Hudson) and the technological developments that made sea exploration by latitude and longitude possible (e.g., compass, sextant, astrolabe, seaworthy ships, chronometers, gunpowder).

Research the routes of early explorers in the Americas and tell what happened during some of the early explorations. Here are some questions to guide your research.
  • Who is Giovanni da Verrazano?
  • Who is Henry Hudson?
  • Who was the first European to explore what is now New York Harbor?
  • What technological developments made sea exploration by longitude and latitude possible?
  • What effect did European explorers have on Native Americans?
To begin, visit the Internet sites listed in Step 2. You may also choose to visit a library, read a book about early exploration, or interview an adult. Then follow Step 3 to write your report.

Step 2. Research

Research answers for the questions you were asked in Step 1. Visit these Web sites. Take notes about them on this page, too!
