Chapter 11: Governing New York

Step 1. Questions

Students understand how different kinds of governments work. Although they have very different responsibilities, national, state and local governments all have a large impact on the lives New York residents. Describe the three different branches of government and what is expected of each branch. Also describe how government affects our lives.

Research the federal, state and local governments in New York. Here are some questions to guide your research.
  • What does each branch of government do?
  • What keeps one branch from becoming too powerful?
  • How is the legislative branch divided?
  • How are state and local governments different from the national government?
  • What is the New York constitution based on?
  • How do the state and local governments help people living in New York?
To begin, visit the Internet sites listed in Step 2. You may also choose to visit a library, read a book on the subject or interview an adult. Then follow Step 3 to write your report.
