Chapter 3: The First People of Missouri
Step 1. Questions
Native Americans were the first people to live in America. The Hopewell and Adena people, known as the Moundbuilders, were the first people in Missouri. They were followed by the Osage people. When the French came to the New World, they began to trade with the Osage. The French offered guns and horses in exchange for animal furs. Research how the French settlers and Native Americans changed each others’ lives.
Research Missouri’s first people. Here are some questions to guide your research.
- How did Missouri’s first people provide food for themselves?
- Why did the Hopewell and Adena build mounds?
- How did the Osage provide food for themselves?
- What effect did the French settlers have on the Osage?
- How did the Mississippi River effect where Missouri’s first people settled?
- How did Osage children learn their people’s traditions?
To begin, visit the Internet sites listed in Step 2. You may also choose to visit a library, read an encyclopedia, or look at an atlas. Then follow Step 3 to write your report.
