Chapter 4: The Arrival of Europeans

Step 1. Questions

Describe the entrepreneurial characteristics of early explorers such as Christopher Columbus, Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet. Why did they decide to come to America? Lewis and Clark also explored America in the 1800s. They relied heavily on people such as York and Sacajawea to assist in their journey. How did these individuals help the explorers find their way?

Research the routes of early explorers in the Americas and tell what happened during some of the early explorations. Here are some questions to guide your research.
  • Who is Christopher Columbus?
  • Why did so many European explorers come to America?
  • How did some Missouri cities such as Ste.Genevieve and St. Louis begin?
  • Why did Lewis and Clark set out to explore the West?
  • How did people like York and Sacajawea help Lewis and Clark?
  • How did life change for Native Americans after explorers discovered their villages?
To begin, visit the Internet sites listed in Step 2. You may also choose to visit a library, read an encyclopedia, or look at an atlas. Then follow Step 3 to write your report.
