Chapter 7: New Challenges for a New World

Step 1. Questions

World War I was followed by several other serious conflicts in the United States. America fell into an economic depression after the war. This period, known as the Great Depression, only ended when the United States joined World War II. This was followed by wars in Asia and a struggle for Civil Rights. Today, problems such as terrorism still exist. Describe the major changes that resulted from these events over the past 100 years.

Research the challenges faced by Americans during the 20th century. Here are some questions to guide your research.
  • How did the two world wars change our country?
  • Before World War II, what steps were taken to end the Great Depression?
  • Why did the United States become involved in the Korean and Vietnam Wars?
  • How did Americans react to the Civil Rights movement?
  • How is technology being used today to prevent terrorism?
To begin, visit the Internet sites listed in Step 2. You may also choose to visit a library, read an encyclopedia, or look at an atlas. Then follow Step 3 to write your report.
