The Southwest is home to the Grand Canyon. Well, at least its “South Rim“ is in Arizona! Read the following quote from President Teddy Roosevelt:
“Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it, and man can only mar it. What you can do is to keep it for your children, your children′s children, and for all who come after you, as one of the great sights which every American should see.“
What did he mean by “the ages have been at work on it?“ Pretend you are a park ranger. Your job is to guide visitors through the Grand Canyon. What do you really know about the Grand Canyon? (Hint: Figure out what President Roosevelt meant!) What will you tell the visitors?
Here are some questions to think about:
How was it formed?
Where did all the rock come from?
Why does it look like it does?
When did all this happen?

Step 2. Research
Once you′ve read about the geology of the Grand Canyon, type your notes in the boxes. Remember to use words and phrases that signal cause and effect relationships. These include: “because, so that, for, since, and this is how.“
