You′ve probably heard about global warming–or climate change–on the news. It sounds like a problem for scientists to deal with, right? Or is there something you can do to help? Global warming is caused by many factors, including the release of greenhouse gases into the air. Did you know that when you watch television, listen to the radio, or surf the Web, you are releasing these “greenhouse gases“ into the air?
So, maybe there is something you can do to help the environment after all!
Let′s examine your surroundings and see how you might be able to make a difference. Next, make a judgment (or form an opinion) about how your habits or actions are impacting the environment. Your judgment should include facts and examples. Here are some questions to think about:
What is climate change and what causes it?
What could happen if the Earth′s temperature continues to rise?
Do you turn out the lights when you aren′t using them?
Do you turn up the thermostat or put on a blanket when it gets cold?
Do you ask for a ride from mom or dad when you could walk or ride your bike?
Do you recycle?
Are you ready? Begin by visiting the Web site listed in Step 2. Look for answers to the questions above and record your notes in the boxes.
Step 2. Research
Once you′ve read about climate change, type your observations in the boxes. Make sure to make judgments in your notes.
