You can tell students that Laura and her sisters went to school in a one-room schoolhouse. Explain how that school was different than their school. Have students decide if they would like to go to school in a one-room schoolhouse. Talk about other things that Laura might have had or things she might have done during her childhood on the western frontier.

Explain to students that the school that Booker T. Washington founded is still a school today. It is the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. With students, locate the state of Alabama on a map. Show students a picture of the school in their textbooks. Then tell students when Booker T. Washington went to Tuskegee, he dreamed of a school with many teachers. At the time he was the only teacher at the school. He saw buildings where there were none. He then devoted his whole life to raising money for teachers and buildings to help the school grow.
