Big Idea: What meanings do national symbols have?

Make a Family Flag

   California Standard K.2 Students recognize national and state symbols and icons such as the national and state flags, the bald eagle, and the Statue of Liberty.

Materials: Crayons, printout of American flag

 

1. Print the flag of the United States.Download Flag

 
 

2. Color the stripes RED.
Color the part around the stars BLUE.
Do you know what the stripes stand for? Do you know what the stars stand for?

 
 

3. What do you and your family like to do together? Do you like to play sports? Do you like to play games?
Think of things, or symbols, that remind you of your family.

 
 

4. Make a flag for your family on the back of your paper. Draw the symbols for the things you like to do together.

 
 

5. Later you can make your family flag using colored paper. Ask someone for help if you need it.
