Tania León
1943–

Tania León was born in Havana, Cuba. León learned to play the piano and violin when she was a child. She moved to New York City in 1967. Two years later, she started the music department and orchestra for the Dance Theater of Harlem. In 1971, León was asked to conduct, or lead, an orchestra.

Later on in 1971, she began to study conducting. León has led orchestras all over the world. She also continues to compose music.

León was presented with the New York Governor’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998.
